Stamford firefighters rescue multiple pets from house fire

STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford firefighters rescued several pets from a house fire Thursday afternoon in the Waterside neighborhood, officials said. Crews were dispatched to 87 Noble Street at 1:28 p.m. after receiving reports of a fire in the basement of a multi-family home.

Firefighters from the South End station arrived first and encountered heavy smoke coming from the basement. As crews advanced into the structure, they located several unconscious animals, including a dog in the basement, according to the fire department.

Recently deployed thermal imaging cameras helped firefighters locate the animals and expedite their removal from the home. “They kept locating more and more animals as they advanced the hose line,” the department said.

Stamford EMS personnel provided life-saving measures to the animals, all of which were taken to Cornell University Veterinary Specialists. While most pets were reported to be doing well, one cat did not survive, according to officials.

A total of 40 firefighters responded to the scene, along with Stamford EMS, Stamford Police, Animal Control, and various city departments. One firefighter sustained a minor injury. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal’s Office.
