EVESHAM, N.J. — Evesham Township Police are urging drivers to remain cautious over the next few months as deer activity increases, raising the risk of car-deer collisions. The department issued a warning Monday, noting that the period from September through November is particularly hazardous for such incidents.
Drivers are more likely to encounter deer not only on local roads but also on major highways during these months, officials said. Police recommend motorists stay especially vigilant during dawn and dusk, when deer are most active.
“One deer running across is often followed by others hurrying to catch up,” Evesham police advised. Drivers should scan the road shoulders for the reflection of deer eyes and, if a collision is unavoidable, avoid swerving. “The most serious accidents happen when a driver swerves to avoid a deer and crashes into something else,” the department said.
Motorists are encouraged to safely stop on the shoulder if a collision occurs.
