Stabbing Suspects Sought in Newark

NEWARK, N.J. — The Newark Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in an aggravated assault that occurred on Saturday, August 10, 2024. Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé released details of the incident, which took place in the early morning hours on South 12th Street.

According to the police report, the altercation began around 5 a.m. when the victim, accompanied by a male and female, was approached by a group of three males and three females in the 700 block of South 12th Street. The suspects allegedly made flirtatious advances toward the victim’s female companion, which led to a physical confrontation.

During the altercation, the male suspects reportedly removed their belts and began swinging them at the victim and his male companion. One of the suspects, described as a Hispanic male, then brandished a black box cutter and lunged at the victim, inflicting a severe stab wound. The group fled the scene, heading north on South 12th Street toward Springfield Avenue.

The victim, who lost consciousness and was bleeding heavily, was transported to University Hospital where he is currently in stable condition. The second male involved in the fight suffered a minor cut.

Detectives have described the stabbing suspect as a Hispanic male wearing a black ski mask, a black sweater, and black and red shoes. Authorities are urging anyone with information on the suspect’s identity to come forward.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to search for the individuals involved in the attack.
