TRENTON, NJ—The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) has announced the introduction of new temporary registration tags designed to improve security and combat fraud. These updated tags, also referred to as temporary registration certificates or “temp tags,” incorporate advanced security features that comply with the provisions of P.L.2023, c.285, legislation passed in January 2024.
The implementation of these new tags will be phased throughout the summer, and motorists can expect to see both the new and old tags on vehicles during this transition period. The NJMVC anticipates that the old tags will be completely phased out by early fall.
Vehicle dealers across the state will need to adjust to the new tag system, which includes a 30-day issuance period for temporary tags. The NJMVC plans to provide detailed information about the new security features and procedures to both law enforcement agencies and dealers in the near future.
Moreover, the updated regulations introduce stricter penalties and fines for any fraudulent activities related to the issuance, possession, or display of temporary registration tags. Additionally, a new vehicle registry for dealers is set to launch in 2025, which will facilitate better information sharing with the NJMVC, enhancing oversight and reducing the potential for fraud.
