Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer, kicks off as motorists take to the road under rising gas prices and record inflation

New Jersey commuters face a variety of challenges on the roads this Monday morning, with several incidents impacting travel across the state.

Significant Incidents:

  1. Cherry Hill Township: A crash and a downed pole on NJ 70 eastbound ramp to NJ 41/CR 154 have led to the closure of the right shoulder and exit ramp, causing detours. Motorists are advised to use caution in this area.
  2. Fort Lee: A disabled truck on the George Washington Bridge upper level northbound eastbound at the New Jersey Side Toll Plaza is blocking one center lane, potentially slowing traffic.
  3. Newark: On the US 1&9 Truck Route southbound near the New Jersey Turnpike, a disabled vehicle has closed one left lane, impacting traffic flow.
  4. Elizabeth: A crash on the New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway southbound south of Interchange 13A near Newark Liberty International Airport involved a vehicle on the right shoulder, though all lanes have since reopened.
  5. Highlands: A water main break on NJ 36 southbound south of Linden Avenue has resulted in the closure of one right lane. Drivers should proceed with caution.

General Traffic Delays:

  • Jersey City to Newark: Delays on the US 1&9 Truck Route southbound are currently ranging from 10-15 minutes.
  • Deptford Township: NJ 55 northbound is experiencing delays due to volume as it approaches south of NJ 42.
  • Cherry Hill Township: I-295 northbound shows pockets of volume from North of Exit 26N to Exit 32 – CR 561.
  • Jersey City: The Pulaski Skyway northbound is seeing travel times of 10-15 minutes from Broadway to Tonnelle Circle. Delays are also significant at the Holland Tunnel with a 30-minute travel time to the New York side.

Bridge and Tunnel Updates:

  • The George Washington Bridge is experiencing heavy traffic with a 35-minute travel time on the upper level and 30 minutes on the lower level eastbound from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge.
  • Lincoln Tunnel has a consistent 25-minute travel time from the New Jersey Turnpike Exit 16E to the New York side on both the center and south tunnels.

Additional Areas of Note:

  • The Garden State Parkway northbound from East Orange to Bloomfield is reporting a 4-mile delay due to volume.
  • Heavy traffic on I-80 eastbound from Mount Olive Twp to Roxbury Twp with travel times of 15-20 minutes.
