LINDEN, NJ – The Linden Police Department has issued a warning after several residents across various New Jersey municipalities reported receiving suspicious phone calls from individuals impersonating police officers. The fraudulent callers have been using actual officer names and technology to mask their phone numbers, making the calls appear as if they are coming from legitimate police department numbers.
The police stressed that neither the Linden Police Department nor any affiliated police union or organization will ever solicit money or personal information over the phone. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and disconnect any unsolicited calls that purport to be from the police.
If contacted by someone claiming to be a Linden police officer, citizens should note the caller’s name and end the call, then verify the call’s legitimacy by directly contacting the Linden Police Department at (908) 474-8500. Additionally, anyone who has fallen victim to this scam by providing personal information or experiencing identity theft is encouraged to file a police report with the department.
The Linden Police Department also reminds the public to never share personal information over the phone, fax, mail, or internet unless the contact was initiated by the individual or the identity of the recipient is confirmed.
