New Jersey Veteran, Congresswoman Calls for President Biden to Withdraw Candidacy

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill issued a statement on President Joe Biden’s tenure and his future role in American politics.

Sherrill, who was endorsed by Joe Biden, who was instrumental in her re-election to Congress is now calling on the President to get out of politics.

“From the U.S. Navy to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Mikie Sherrill has always stood up for our country and our values,” Biden said in a statement at the time. “At a time when so many in our country feel left behind by Washington, we need to send leaders like Mikie to Washington who have proven records of service to others and of getting things done. I know that Mikie Sherrill will fight hard for the interests of the middle class in New Jersey and will make sure that their voices are heard in the halls of Congress. I am proud to endorse her today.”

Highlighting Biden’s over 50 years of service, Sherrill praised his leadership in passing significant legislation, such as infrastructure investments, support for Ukraine, strategic competition with China, economic recovery post-COVID, and support for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits.

She was met with severe and critical backlash online for turning her back on the President who pushed for her re-election.

“I’m from NJ, and this is NOT how we do people who have helped us in the past, as Biden helped you. Absolutely despicable.” said D. Earl Stevens.

“Joe Biden helped get elected and this is the thanks he gets? Pathetic. Good luck on your reelect because you are gonna need it,” another responded.

Sherrill emphasized Biden’s pivotal role in defeating former President Donald Trump, whom she described as an existential threat to the nation and its institutions. Reflecting on her initial motivation for running for office, she stated the importance of preventing Trump from returning to the White House and implementing policies detrimental to the middle class and various rights and freedoms, including abortion rights.

“Didn’t New Jersey Primary voters vote for Joe Biden as their nominee? What gives you the right to ask him to step down and negate their voted choice? Seriously, when you disregard the people’s choice, you are no better than MAGAs,” another.

Citing concerns from her constituents about the future of the country, Sherrill underscored the urgency of addressing the threat Trump poses to democracy. She expressed her worries about the potential risks to her children’s rights under another Trump presidency and the recent Supreme Court decision enhancing presidential power.

While acknowledging Biden and his team’s dedication to public service and democracy, Sherrill called on President Biden to declare that he will not seek reelection and to help guide the nation towards selecting a new nominee.
