Body of Missing Swimmer Recovered Near Benedict Bridge

PRINCE FREDERICK, MD – The body of Alex Garcia-Lopez, 19, of Huntingtown, was recovered on July 10, 2024, near the Benedict Bridge after he went missing while swimming in the Patuxent River. Deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau initially responded to a 911 hang-up call at 7:26 p.m. on July 8, 2024, at 6790 Hallowing Lane.

Upon arrival, deputies determined the call was related to a potential missing person. The investigation revealed that Garcia-Lopez was swimming 10-20 yards from the shoreline when he went underwater and did not resurface. Immediate search efforts by the Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, Prince Frederick and Benedict Volunteer Fire Departments, DNR, the CCSO Drone Unit, and the Calvert County Dive Team were unsuccessful.

Garcia-Lopez’s body was recovered around 6 a.m. on July 10, near the area where he was last seen. His next of kin have been notified, and his body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for further investigation.
