Transit Riders to Rally Against NJ Transit Fare Hikes

Newark, NJ — In response to impending fare hikes, transit riders will rally outside NJ Transit headquarters, urging Governor Murphy to halt the increases set to take effect on July 1. The protest will occur amidst a heatwave that has exacerbated the challenges of New Jersey’s aging transit system.

Middle, working-class, and low-wage families in New Jersey are grappling with unprecedented inflation, struggling to afford basic necessities such as rent, utilities, food, and childcare. The planned 15% fare hike for commuting will further strain their finances. While the state’s decision to reinstate a partial corporate business tax to fund NJ Transit is a positive step, it is seen as insufficient without accompanying service improvements.

Protestors argue that fare hikes without service enhancements represent a policy failure. They believe that working families should not bear the burden of addressing issues caused by years of underfunding.

The rally is scheduled for Friday at 8:30 AM outside NJ Transit headquarters at 1 Penn Plaza East, Newark. The demonstration will include New Jersey families, transit riders, and members of the For the Many New Jersey coalition.
