TRENTON, NJ – The Senate Education Committee has recently advanced a bill, sponsored by Senator James Beach, that would offer a gross income tax deduction to educators and paraprofessionals for their unreimbursed purchases of classroom supplies. This legislative move aims to alleviate the financial burden on teachers who often spend between $500 and $750 annually on essential classroom items.

Senator Beach highlighted that the proposed tax deduction is a gesture of appreciation towards those who invest their own resources to enhance educational experiences for students. The bill, identified as S-2378, defines “eligible educators” as those who work in roles such as K-12 teachers, instructors, counselors, speech language specialists, or principals, and who are employed for at least 900 hours during the school year at any public or private school in New Jersey.

Paraprofessionals, defined as classroom or school aides assisting in pupil supervision, are also included in the bill. The proposed tax deduction is capped at $250 per year and covers expenses related to books, computer equipment, software, and other educational materials, excluding athletic equipment.
