Cargo Ship That Struck and Collapsed Maryland Bridge Finally Leaves Baltimore Enroute to Virginia

BALTIMORE, MD—On Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish, an 87-foot Marine Protector class vessel, commenced the escort of the Motor Vessel Dali as it transited from the Port of Baltimore to the Port of Virginia. The Dali, a cargo ship, was accompanied by four tug vessels and a designated security zone established by the Coast Guard.

The journey marks a significant step nearly three months after the Dali experienced a power outage and collided with a support column of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, leading to the bridge’s collapse. The incident has since necessitated extensive recovery and safety measures.

The Dali departed Baltimore just before 8:30 a.m., navigating under its own power. It carried a full complement of 22 crew members along with six salvage experts on board to ensure a safe transit.

This operation highlights the coordinated efforts between maritime authorities to ensure the safety of both the vessel and maritime traffic in the region. The Coast Guard continues to play a crucial role in maritime safety and the oversight of such significant logistical operations.
