OCEAN CITY, MD — With temperatures climbing, the Ocean City Police Department is urging visitors and residents planning outdoor activities today to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. The warning is particularly critical for those heading to the beach or boardwalk.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights the importance of recognizing the warning signs and symptoms of heat illnesses, which can range from heat cramps, a mild form of heat-related illness, to heat exhaustion and even heat stroke, a severe emergency.
Heat Cramps are often the initial indicator of heat-related distress. Symptoms include painful muscle cramps and spasms in the legs and abdomen, accompanied by heavy sweating. First aid measures involve applying firm pressure on cramping muscles, gently massaging them, and providing small sips of water unless nausea occurs. If cramps persist for over an hour, immediate medical attention is necessary.
Heat Exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, cool and clammy skin, muscle cramps, and dizziness, with potential nausea or vomiting. To assist someone experiencing heat exhaustion, move them to a cooler place, loosen their clothing, apply cool, wet cloths, and offer water. If symptoms exacerbate or vomiting occurs repeatedly, seek medical help.

Heat Stroke represents the most severe form of heat illness, characterized by a throbbing headache, confusion, dizziness, a body temperature above 103°F, and possibly unconsciousness. Immediate action for heat stroke includes calling 911, moving the person to a cooler environment, and cooling them down with damp cloths or a bath.
Ocean City authorities emphasize the urgency of these preventive measures and encourage everyone to stay hydrated and cool to enjoy a safe summer season.
