New Jersey Tops U.S. in Prenuptial Agreement Rates, Study Finds
New research from TurboDebt reveals that New Jersey leads the nation in the prevalence of prenuptial agreements, with nearly one in five married couples (17%) in the state having a formal prenup, surpassing the national average of 13%. This indicates a growing acceptance of prenups as essential financial planning tools in marriages.
Public Perception and Practicality of Prenups
Despite the increasing adoption, prenups remain controversial. The study found that 32% of unmarried individuals view prenuptial agreements as a potential detriment to marital stability, describing them as a ‘recipe for disaster’. TurboDebt’s survey, which involved 3,000 married couples, highlights a divide in perceptions surrounding the agreements.
The Role of Prenups in Financial Security
Josh Stomel, Co-founder of TurboDebt, emphasized the importance of prenups in providing clarity and security in financial matters within marriages. “Prenups are increasingly recognized for their role in preventing contentious disputes and ensuring clear financial responsibilities,” Stomel stated. He advocates for couples to engage in open discussions about their financial futures, with prenups serving as a part of those crucial conversations.
The survey also includes an interactive map detailing the adoption rates of prenups across various states, reflecting a broad spectrum of attitudes towards these agreements across the country.
