TRENTON, NJ—Earlier this year, Dollar Tree Inc. revealed plans to close a significant number of its Family Dollar store locations across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The discount retail giant will shut down 600 Family Dollar stores in 2024 and plans additional closures, including 370 more Family Dollar stores and 30 Dollar Tree locations in the coming years. These closures will affect approximately 15% of the Family Dollar chain.
The decision comes as the retailer faces economic pressures, with inflation notably impacting its core demographic of low-income consumers. Shoppers are increasingly comparing prices across stores, and rising incidents of shoplifting have further strained the company’s operations.
In New Jersey, this spring, the store at Eastpointe shopping center in Middletown shut down.
This closure is indicative of the broader impact on local communities where such stores are often crucial retail hubs and employment sources.
In Pennsylvania, the impact is similarly significant with six Family Dollar locations in the Philadelphia area were closed, as reported by ABC27 news, based on a WARN notice from the Department of Labor and Industry. The affected stores are located at:
- 1325 Point Breeze Avenue, Philadelphia
- 4701 West Girard Avenue, Philadelphia
- 1925 West Allegheny Avenue, Philadelphia
- 1955 West Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia
- 2201 West Cambria Street, Philadelphia
- 2459 Kensington Avenue, Philadelphia
These closures are expected to affect 62 workers, highlighting the economic ripple effect of such decisions on local employment and community services. As these stores wind down operations, the communities face the challenge of losing a vital retail option and potential job opportunities.
