NORTH PARK, PA — The Allegheny County Police Department’s Homicide Unit was called to North Park after a tragic incident involving a bicyclist and downed power lines.
At 8:22 PM Monday, authorities were alerted to a bicyclist who seemingly collided with downed power lines along a trail near Olympia Grove in North Park. First responders found the adult male victim amidst live wires but were unable to reach him immediately.
They awaited the arrival of Duquesne Light to secure the area. Two hours later, the power company had deactivated the electricity, and the man was declared dead at the scene.
Earlier that day, at 8:40 AM, local emergency services had been notified of wires down and emitting smoke on the same trail. Various emergency teams, including the police, fire, EMS, and park maintenance, were dispatched following the report.
Investigations confirmed that the hazardous wires were owned by Duquesne Light, prompting a response from the company at 8:51 AM.
The county police and fire crews took safety measures, closing the trail and setting up caution tape at critical points, including the main entrance at Olympia Grove.
