Cherry Hill, NJ – From May 21 to 22, 2024, the Cherry Hill Police Department, in collaboration with over 20 local merchants, conducted a retail theft operation aimed at reducing theft in the area. This two-day initiative resulted in 38 arrests, including several suspects involved in organized retail theft, and the recovery of tens of thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise.
Chief Robert Kempf reported that local retailers participating in the new Cherry Hill Retail Theft Initiative were “ecstatic” with the results. The initiative was conceived by Chief Kempf following discussions with merchants whose stores had been affected by theft since November 2023. A meeting between retailers and the police department’s Investigative Division led to the decision to conduct periodic enforcement operations.
The operation involved store security focusing on in-store surveillance while plainclothes detectives and patrol officers were stationed nearby to apprehend suspected thieves. The goal was to prevent suspects from fleeing or resisting arrest.
Veteran Detective Robert Daniello, who heads the program, credited teamwork for the operation’s success. “When everyone is on the same page, it makes our job much easier,” he said.
Chief Kempf noted that Cherry Hill Township faces similar retail theft challenges as other areas but emphasized the unique police approach and commitment to community-based solutions. Mayor David Fleisher echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of public safety and supporting innovative approaches to crime prevention.
