WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two Virginia residents, Casey Jane Tryon-Castro, 34, of Roanoke, and Micaiah Joseph, 33, of Triangle, have been convicted of multiple charges relating to their actions during the January 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. The breach interrupted a joint session of Congress meant to confirm the electoral votes from the 2020 presidential election.

A federal jury in the District of Columbia found Tryon-Castro and Joseph guilty of engaging in violent actions against law enforcement officers. Tryon-Castro was convicted of four felony charges including civil disorder and robbery, alongside four misdemeanors such as entering a restricted building and engaging in physical violence. Joseph faced two felony charges and four misdemeanors under similar categories.

The confrontations occurred primarily at the Capitol’s Lower West Terrace Tunnel, where Tryon-Castro and Joseph, along with other rioters, clashed violently with police for over two and a half hours. Court documents detail that Tryon-Castro was actively involved in the front lines, at times seizing a police riot shield to hand to other rioters. Joseph, identified by his distinctive attire including a tricorn hat and gas mask, used physical force against officers and assisted in the collective efforts to breach police defenses.

The sentencing for Tryon-Castro and Joseph will be determined at a later date by U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras. Their arrests took place in January 2023, a result of investigations led by the FBI’s Washington Field Office, with assistance from U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.

The cases are being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia in collaboration with the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, with additional support from the U.S. Attorney’s Offices in both the Western and Eastern Districts of Virginia.
