TOMS RIVER, NJ – Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced the arrest of Sorah Tyner, 37, of Toms River, following a devastating car crash in Jackson that resulted in two fatalities, including one juvenile. Tyner faces multiple charges including two counts of vehicular homicide, manslaughter, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police said a forensic audit of her cell phone showed she was on the phone at the time of the deadly crash.
The tragic accident occurred around 5 PM on May 30, when Tyner, driving a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica with two minors aboard, reportedly lost control while navigating a curve on East Veterans Highway.
Her vehicle crossed into the opposing lane, colliding head-on with a 2010 GMC Terrain driven by Carolina Bonilla-Hernandez, 36, of Jackson. The impact of the crash led to significant casualties and injuries.
Bonilla-Hernandez was transported to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries. Tyner and the two minors in her vehicle were also taken to the hospital; one juvenile was pronounced dead upon arrival. The surviving minor remains hospitalized in stable condition, while Tyner has been treated and released.
A further investigation revealed troubling details leading up to the crash.
Detectives determined that Tyner’s vehicle had been in the wrong lane for some distance without corrective action taken to return to the correct lane. Additionally, it was found that one of the minors was not secured in a proper child car seat suitable for his age and weight but only restrained by a seatbelt.
Evidence from a court-authorized search of Tyner’s cell phone indicated she was using the device at the time of the accident. Authorities also noted inconsistencies in her statements at the crash scene.
Tyner was arrested at her home on Thursday without incident and is currently held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
