Soccer Penalty in New Jersey Leads to Player Pulling Gun on Opponent

SECAUCUS, NJ — A heated moment at a local soccer game led to the arrest of 34-year-old Reda Benyamin of Jersey City, after he allegedly pointed a handgun at another player during a post-game confrontation. The incident occurred on May 2 at Shetik Field, located at 225 County Avenue.

Following a collision on the field, both Benyamin and the other involved player were ejected from the game after a verbal altercation escalated.

Post-game, the dispute continued when both individuals encountered each other at a traffic light at the intersection of Jefferson and County Avenue. It was here that Benyamin, who holds a concealed carry permit, allegedly threatened the other player with a black handgun.

After a month-long investigation, the Secaucus Police Department’s Anti-Crime Unit arrested Benyamin on May 31 at his residence. During a subsequent vehicle search, officers seized a loaded Beretta 92x 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

Chief Dennis Miller of the Secaucus Police commented on the incident, highlighting the dangers of irresponsible firearm possession despite stringent local gun laws.

Benyamin now faces charges including Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose, Aggravated Assault, and Prohibited Area to Carry a Firearm. He is currently held at the Hudson County Jail, with all charges pending as accusations until proven in court.
