EAST BRUNSICK, NJ—Local authorities have reported a black bear sighting in the Lawrence Brook area. The East Brunswick Police Department urges the public to remain calm, as they are closely monitoring the situation. Currently, there is no immediate danger as the bear appears to be merely passing through the area.

Black bears generally avoid human contact. Residents are advised to stay indoors if they are near the sighting and to contact the police at 732-390-6901 or the DEP hotline at 877-927-6337 for any bear-related emergencies.

To prevent attracting bears, the public should ensure that food sources such as garbage, pet food, and birdseed are secured. It is crucial to avoid feeding bears as they quickly associate humans with food, leading to potential conflicts.

Here are some safety tips to follow if you encounter a bear:

  • DON’T: Feed or approach bears, run from a bear, or make direct eye contact.
  • DO: Stay calm, make your presence known, be loud, and make yourself appear larger. Ensure the bear has a clear escape route.

In the unlikely event of a bear attack, defending oneself by targeting the bear’s snout or eyes with anything available is advised. Report any bear damage or nuisance behavior to the DEP’s hotline.
