PRINCESS ANNE, MD — The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is continuing its investigation into the homicide of a state prison inmate at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Somerset County. The deceased inmate has been identified as 49-year-old Eugene Stanford, who was declared dead by emergency medical personnel.
The incident occurred yesterday at approximately 3:30 p.m., but it was not until today at 12:45 p.m. that the Homicide Unit was notified by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IIU). Initial autopsy results indicated foul play, leading to the ruling of Stanford’s death as a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
A suspect, also an inmate, has been identified in connection with Stanford’s death. Charges have not yet been placed, and the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed pending further investigation.
Investigators from both the State Police and the DPSCS IIU are working closely on the case. Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be forwarded to the Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine the appropriate charges.
