A Washington County man’s green thumb has brought him more than just beautiful flowers—it has also led to a significant lottery win. The retired U.S. Postal Service worker and Vietnam veteran, an avid gardener and lottery enthusiast, claimed a $50,000 top prize from the Maryland Lottery’s Bonus Match 5 game.
The winning quick-pick ticket, purchased for the May 3 drawing, turned out to be a life-changer for the Western Maryland resident. He attributes his win to a lucky streak that started with a $400 victory on the same game, prompting him to buy additional tickets.
Following the draw, the winner checked the numbers and discovered his grand win on the very last line of the results. The excitement was so overwhelming that it kept him awake that night.
With the winnings, he plans to invest in a new air conditioner and set aside some money for his grandchildren. The claim for his prize was made earlier this week in Baltimore.
Additionally, Alex Convenience Store in Boonsboro, where the winning ticket was sold, will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery. This store played a part in what is the 14th top-prize winning Bonus Match 5 ticket sold in 2024.
