LAUREL, MD — A casual lottery player from Prince George’s County turned a lucky break into a $100,000 windfall after purchasing a $10 Money Drop scratch-off ticket. The fortunate winner, a computer programmer, discovered his prize at the Sandy Spring Exxon on Old Sandy Spring Road in Laurel.

The Laurel resident, who plays scratch-offs only occasionally, decided to try his luck when he found himself with some extra cash while stopping to buy gas. “I looked over and saw the purple in the Money Drop scratch-offs so I decided to buy one,” he recounted. His gamble paid off when he scratched off a match on number 18, revealing the game’s $100,000 top prize beneath.

The win, initially unbelievable to the winner, was confirmed after a double-check and a snapshot sent to a friend. With his new fortune, he plans to pay off bills and save the remainder.

The retailer, Sandy Spring Exxon, also benefits from the win, receiving a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize ticket. This marks the third major win in the Money Drop game since its launch on December 28, 2023, with several more high-value prizes still up for grabs.
