BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ — Vincent Root, a 59-year-old special education teacher at Chatsworth Elementary School, faces new charges in a deepening abuse scandal. Initially charged in October 2023 for sexual misconduct involving seven students, Root now stands accused of similar offenses against a total of 14 students.
The investigation into Root’s actions began last month following a new allegation by a student, leading to the discovery of additional victims. According to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, the abuse, which took place within the classrooms of the school, spans multiple years and involves all male victims. The identities and further details of the victims remain confidential to protect their privacy.
Following the recent indictment, Root has been charged with 14 counts of sexual assault in the second degree and 14 counts of endangering the welfare of a child in the second degree, reflecting the increased number of alleged victims.
Authorities continue to seek information from the public and urge anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Root to come forward. Contact can be made via email at tips@co.burlington.nj.us or by phone at 609-265-5035 to speak with a detective from the Special Victims Unit.
