CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, NJ — Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland has issued a statement regarding recent disturbances in Wildwood and Ocean City, which occurred over the weekend and involved large groups of teens and young adults. The incidents led to significant police action to ensure public safety and prevent further escalation.
In Wildwood, police declared a state of civil unrest and closed the boardwalk to maintain control following disturbances. Meanwhile, in Ocean City, a stabbing and several fights on the boardwalk were quickly contained and controlled by local law enforcement. The investigation into the stabbing continues, with charges pending.
“For those who come to our communities to create unrest, be forewarned that your bad decisions and bad actions will not be tolerated and law enforcement will use all legal measures to arrest and charge all violators. Instead of capturing positive memories you will be issued charges to answer to and possible permanent records that will impact your future,” Sutherland said.
The coordinated efforts of the Wildwood and Ocean City Police, along with support from the County Sheriff’s Department and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office detectives, were highlighted as exemplary in handling these difficult situations.
Prosecutor Sutherland warned those who disrupt the peace that such actions will lead to serious legal consequences. He emphasized the commitment of local law enforcement to ensuring safety for all visitors, residents, and families, enabling them to enjoy and create positive memories without interference.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to report any criminal or illegal activities to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135, through the anonymous tip lines provided on the Prosecutor’s and Sheriff’s Office websites, or to Cape May County Crime Stoppers at 609-889-3597.
