MORRIS COUNTY, NJ—The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and Morris County Sheriff’s Office have issued a warning about a jury duty scam affecting residents. Scammers, posing as law enforcement officials, are reportedly demanding fines for supposed missed jury duty appointments.
Officials have logged two instances of this scam over the past two weeks. The fraudsters contact victims, falsely claiming that a warrant for their arrest has been issued due to their failure to show up for jury duty. These criminals might impersonate real police officers, complete with fabricated titles and badge numbers.
The scammers manipulate caller IDs to make it seem as though the calls are coming from legitimate sources such as the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Morris County Sheriff’s Office, or Morris County Courthouse. Victims are instructed to keep the matter confidential and are threatened with arrest if they contact anyone.
Residents are urged to verify the identity of any caller by contacting the Morris County Sheriff’s Office directly at 973-285-6600 during business hours or 973-285-2900 after hours.
To avoid falling prey to such scams, the public should remember that genuine law enforcement officials will never demand payment through money cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency to prevent an arrest. Additionally, be wary of any unsolicited caller or message that demands immediate payment or personal information.
