A Cameron County woman has pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault for shooting Cameron County District Attorney Paul J. Malizia at Malizia’s office last year.
Porice D. Mincy, 32, pleaded guilty Monday and was sentenced to 4 to 8 years in prison by Senior Judge Pamela Ruest in Cameron County Court. The charges were prosecuted by the Office of Attorney General following the June 14, 2023, shooting. Malizia was treated for his injuries at an area hospital and released on the same day.
“This brazen act of violence is particularly disturbing because it involves an armed individual shooting an elected official sworn to serve and protect his community,” said Attorney General Michelle Henry.
Henry commended District Attorney Malizia for his dedication to the community despite the traumatic assault. On the day of the incident, Mincy showed up unannounced at Malizia’s office regarding a property transfer issue he had handled, leading to a confrontation where Mincy shot Malizia in the leg before fleeing. Investigations revealed that Mincy’s actions were related to a dispute concerning Malizia’s private law practice, not his role as district attorney.
Deputy Attorney General Philip McCarthy from the Office of Attorney General’s Criminal Prosecutions Section led the prosecution of the case, securing the guilty plea from Mincy.
