North Bergen Man Arrested for Hiring Killer to Murder Woman

NORTH BERGEN, NJ — Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced the arrest of Miguel Cortes, a 37-year-old resident of North Bergen, in connection with a murder-for-hire scheme. Cortes was taken into custody on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, outside his home on Paterson Plank Road.

Charged with Conspiracy to Commit Murder, a first-degree crime, Cortes is currently held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility. The state has also filed a motion for his detention, with a hearing scheduled for Monday, May 20, 2024.

The arrest followed a tip received by the North Bergen Police Department on May 9, 2024, regarding Cortes’ alleged plot to pay an individual to murder a woman known to him. Thankfully, the intended victim was not harmed.

Prosecutor Suarez has acknowledged the efforts of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Major Case Unit and the North Bergen Police Department for their roles in the investigation and arrest.
