North Jersey Man Gets 28 Years in Prison for Best Buy Armed Robbery

Jersey City, NJ – Michael Guirguis, 39, has been sentenced to 28 years in connection with an armed robbery at a Best Buy store. The sentencing was announced by Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, Chief of Detectives Robert McNally, and East Hanover Township Police Chief Christopher F. Cannizzo.

Judge Ralph E. Amirata, J.S.C. imposed the sentence on Thursday, with Guirguis receiving 28 years for first-degree Robbery. Guirguis was found guilty of Armed Robbery, Shoplifting, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a jury on March 22.

The offenses were related to an incident on May 28, 2022, when Guirguis brandished a knife while attempting to flee the store with stolen electronic items.

The State presented evidence during the trial that Guirguis stole multiple iPads and iPhones valued at $4,500 from Best Buy on Route 10 in East Hanover. Guirguis threatened store employees with a knife during the robbery. Law enforcement officers found Guirguis in the parking lot wielding the knife along with the stolen items. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office credited the Trial Team and various law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation.

Prosecutor Carroll extended thanks and recognition to the East Hanover Township Police Department, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office General Investigation Unit for their contributions to the successful prosecution of Guirguis.
