New York Councilman Mourned by Community

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — The Town of Clarkstown and the broader Rockland County community are mourning the sudden loss of Councilman Mark Woods, who passed away from an apparent heart attack at the age of 54. The Rockland County District Attorney’s Office and Town Supervisor George Hoehmann confirmed the tragic news.

Councilman Woods, a decorated NYPD detective and combat Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, was known for his lifelong dedication to service. After retiring from the NYPD, he continued his commitment to helping others, particularly veterans, as the Director of The Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Services at Bridges, a local non-profit. Elected in November to represent Ward 1, his sudden death has left a void in the community he served.

In honor of Councilman Woods, flags at Town Hall, all town buildings, and parks have been lowered to half-staff. A memorial, including a condolence book, is set up in the Town Hall Auditorium, open during business hours from Monday, May 20. Details on service arrangements will be announced next week.

The family of Councilman Woods, including his wife Jeanne, son Ray, daughter Maggie, and his mother, have requested privacy during this difficult time. The community extends its deepest sympathies and prayers to his family and friends.
