Delaware State Police Announce Formation of Highway Safety Unit

Dover, DE—The Delaware State Police (DSP) has announced the establishment of the new Highway Safety Unit (HSU) to enhance road safety in Delaware via proactive enforcement measures and public education initiatives. A product of cooperation between the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security (DSHS), the Delaware State Police, and the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), the HSU aims to curb fatalities and crashes in the state.

“As we remain focused on reducing fatalities and crashes in our state, the new DSP Highway Safety Unit enables us to proactively devote full-time resources to address traffic safety priorities. This dedicated unit will be visible on our highways and instrumental in preventing crashes, minimizing injuries, and saving lives,” stated Secretary of Safety and Homeland Security Nathaniel McQueen, Jr.

According to Colonel Melissa Zebley, Superintendent of the Delaware State Police, the HSU will comprise an eleven-person team committed to statewide traffic enforcement.

The team will focus primarily on specified “High-Intensity” roadways such as Interstate 95, Interstate 495, Interstate 295, and State Route 1. Other highways will be identified based on speed, aggressive driving complaints, crash data, and DUI incidents.

Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski emphasized the urgency of addressing unsafe driving practices on Delaware’s roads, noting the passage of new safety legislation and the launch of the Be DelAWARE safety campaign. With the introduction of the new Highway Safety Unit, a collaborative effort among DSHS, DSP, and DelDOT, a strong message is sent to all road users that safety should be a top priority to ensure safer driving conditions for everyone.
