Bronx, NY — A Rikers Island inmate has been sentenced to six years in prison for attempting to rape a nurse in a jail clinic.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced the sentence for Michael Cleaver, 38, who pleaded guilty to attempted rape in the first degree on April 12. Cleaver must also register as a sex offender.

The incident occurred on November 12, 2021, at approximately 4:12 p.m. in the Eric M. Taylor Center. Cleaver, admitted as a new detainee earlier that day, followed a female nurse into an examination room, locked the door, and attempted to rape her. The assault was interrupted by a detainee and correction officers who intervened.

Justice Seth Steed of the Bronx Supreme Court handed down the sentence.
