Brick Cops Under State Criminal Investigation After Man Suffering Apparent Medical Episode Dies

TRENTON, NJ – Police officers in Brick Township are now under a state investigation after they reported to a call of a man in distress in the street. The man later died.

Now, those cops are being investigated for possible criminal charges.

Only in New Jersey.

The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death of an adult male following an encounter with law enforcement on Monday in Brick Township, Ocean County, New Jersey.

The male died after experiencing an apparent medical episode, with authorities yet to reveal his identity.

According to initial findings, officers responded to a distress call around 4:27 p.m., encountering the male in distress on the street. Medical assistance was provided, and the male was later pronounced dead at Ocean University Medical Center in Brick Township around 5:48 p.m.

A 2019 state law mandates that the Attorney General’s Office investigates deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement. The law further requires such investigations to be presented to a grand jury to determine if legal action against the involved officers is warranted. The ongoing investigation aims to ascertain the cause and manner of death, along with the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter.

That law could have some cops seriously thinking about rendering assistance knowing their job could be on the line in the future, or even possible criminal charges and jail time.
