TRENTON, NJ – Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway has agreed to participate in state legislative hearings concerning campus protests and student safety, following a request during Thursday’s Assembly budget hearing.
The announcement was made by Assemblywoman Aura Dunn, who emphasized the concerns about campus safety expressed by her constituents, including students and faculty.
When Dunn questioned Holloway, he confirmed his willingness to engage in a more detailed discussion about recent campus events. He was originally present to discuss higher education funding but also discussed issues such as a pro-Palestine encampment on campus. Although not personally involved in the negotiations with protestors, Holloway revealed that his representative negotiated concessions costing approximately $175,000.
The Rutgers president is also slated to testify before the House Committee on Education and Workforce following these events. Additionally, the university is under a federal investigation concerning its handling of antisemitism allegations. Support for the hearings has been voiced by several Republican legislators, highlighting the broader legislative interest in the university’s governance and student safety measures.
