New Jersey Moves to Reduce Restrictions on Historic QQ Plated Vehicles

TRENTON, NJ — A legislative proposal, introduced on Tuesday, seeks to expand the use of historic motor vehicles in New Jersey for pleasure driving. Senator John J. Burzichelli of District 3, covering Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem, sponsored Senate No. 2823, which aims to amend existing laws regarding historic vehicles.

The bill modifies Section 1 of P.L.1964, c.195 to allow historic motor vehicles, defined as being at least 25 years old and maintained primarily for collector purposes, to be used for occasional travel. Occasional travel under the new definition would permit usage of these vehicles not more than one day per week for non-exhibition purposes.

Currently, New Jersey law limits the use of historic motor vehicles to exhibition and educational activities. The proposed changes would enable owners to enjoy more frequent use of their vintage cars, broadening the scope beyond just showcasing at events. The act is set to take effect on the first day of the sixth month following its enactment.
