Kingston, NY – Gunercindo Diaz-Diaz, 41, of Kingston, allegedly slashed a barber multiple times with a knife and then harmed himself on a city street. The incident occurred on Thursday at 6:10 p.m. in the 600 block of Broadway in Ulster County.
Chief Egidio Tinti of the Kingston Police stated that Diaz-Diaz was seen by a New York State Trooper with a knife to his neck. Despite efforts to prevent self-harm, Diaz-Diaz cut his neck, leading to minor injuries. The trooper subdued him with a taser before Kingston Police intervened.
Diaz-Diaz was then taken to HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley Hospital for treatment. Shortly after, a 68-year-old barbershop employee, who was not identified, was discovered with multiple abdominal wounds attributed to Diaz-Diaz. The employee underwent emergency surgery and is expected to recover.
Authorities clarified that the two individuals were unfamiliar, launching an ongoing investigation into the matter.
By midnight, Diaz-Diaz was discharged from the hospital and subsequently detained by Kingston Police for felony assault and weapon possession charges. He faced arraignment on Friday and was remanded to Ulster County Jail without bail.
