TRENTON – The Attorney General’s Office is looking into a death that followed an arrest on Tuesday in Toms River, New Jersey. Officials have yet to release the identity of the deceased adult male, who passed away after being taken into custody for existing warrants.
As per reports, at around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, law enforcement officers from the Island Heights and Toms River Police Departments, along with the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, tried to apprehend the male at a gas station on Route 37 near West End Avenue.
Before the arrest, the individual declined to leave his stationary vehicle, citing a medical issue. Despite this, officers managed to detain him and administer medical care on-site. The man was then taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where he was eventually declared deceased at approximately 2:25 p.m.
A statute enacted in 2019 mandates the Attorney General’s Office to investigate any fatality during an interaction with a law enforcement officer while on duty or while the deceased is in custody.
The inquiry is ongoing with no further details available at present.
