TOMS RIVER, NJ – A vote to merge the Seaside Heights school district with the Toms River Regional School District ended with a defeat for Toms River voters who overwhelmingly voted in favor of the merger.
That’s because the small voting base of Seaside Heights defeated the vote in the ballot box, essentially sinking the plan once and for all…for now.
“We won. I’m immensely thankful to all the teachers and family that made this possible. Their support and dedication have not only preserved a place of learning and growth for our community but have also demonstrated the power of unity and collaboration. Your actions have made a huge impact and we are truly grateful to each and every one of you. Together, we have ensured that the light of education continues to shine brightly for future generations. Thank you very much. With God everything is possible,” said a post on the Facebook Page Save Hugh J. Boys Elementary School.
Seaside Heights residents decided against a proposal to merge their school district with Toms River Regional Schools. The proposal required approval from both Seaside Heights and Toms River Regional to proceed. Unofficial election results revealed that Seaside Heights voters cast 231 votes against and 167 in favor of the merger, with all districts reported by 9 PM on Tuesday.
Overall, 8,653 votes were recorded among the five towns involved, from a total of 86,530 registered voters. In Seaside Heights, mail-in ballots showed 31 votes in favor and 59 against the merger. In contrast, Toms River Regional District reported 2,364 votes supporting the merger and 427 opposing it.
It was rumored by political insiders that the school would be used for a new police headquarters for the Seaside Heights Police Department if the measure was approved.
