Cumberland Police Arrest Suspect in Assault Incident

CUMBERLAND, MDAn assault incident on the streets of Cumberland led to the arrest of 36-year-old Demond Arthur Scott Jr. on April 6, 2024.

The Cumberland City Police were called to the scene on the 1000 block of Myrtle St after receiving reports of an assault in progress. Upon arrival, officers encountered Scott attempting to leave the area on foot. He claimed to have been involved in only a verbal altercation with a female, who had left the scene. However, the female victim soon contacted police through a neighbor, reporting that Scott had choked her during an altercation following a dispute at a nearby residence.

A witness corroborated the victim’s account, leading to Scott’s arrest. He faced charges of second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace. Following an initial court appearance, Scott was detained at the Allegany County Detention Center with a bond set at $2,500.
