New Jersey Students Could Get Excused Absence for Performing at Military Funerals Under Guardian Bill

New Jersey Legislators Introduce Bill to Excuse School Absences for Musical Performances at Military Funerals

TRENTON, NJ — A new bill pre-filed for the upcoming legislative session aims to support students participating in military funeral musical performances. Sponsored by Assemblyman Donald A. Guardian of District 2 (Atlantic) and Assemblyman Michael Venezia of District 34 (Essex), the proposed legislation seeks to mark absences for public school students as excused if they are away to perform music at military funerals for veterans or members of the U.S. Armed Forces or the New Jersey National Guard.

Under this bill, such absences will not negatively impact the students’ attendance records, including any transcripts, applications, employment forms, or similar documents where attendance information might be required. The move, co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Murphy, highlights the state’s recognition of the significance of honoring military service members and the value of student participation in these solemn ceremonies.
