TRENTON, NJ – Allison Chris Meyers, the first trans cabinet member under the administration of Governor Phil Murphy, announced in response to Transgender Day of Visibility, which fell on Easter Sunday.
Meyers spoke about the difficulties and fears they had during the appointment process.
“There’s no reason to be ashamed of who you are,” Meyers said. “I was also afraid of how the media would perceive me. Sure enough, many were supportive, but there was a lot of really hateful ones.”
In 2022, Murphy announced the appointment of Allison Chris Myers as the Acting Chair and CEO of the New Jersey Civil Service Commission (CSC), marking a historic first for the state.
Myers succeeded Deirdré Webster Cobb, Esq., who announced her retirement after over 30 years of state service and was the first transgender individual to serve as a Cabinet Member in New Jersey. Governor Murphy praised Myers’ career dedication and contributions to the Civil Service Commission, highlighting her over 20 years of service and tenure in the United States Navy.
Myers, a Cumberland County resident, attorney, and Navy veteran, has been with the CSC since January 2001. She previously held the position of Director of the Division of Appeals and Regulatory Affairs and was appointed Deputy Chair/CEO in June 2022. Myers pledged to continue the CSC’s mission to serve New Jersey’s public through merit-based selection and appointment processes and to support Governor Murphy’s agenda for a diverse and effective public service workforce.
