NEWARK, NJ – A United Airlines flight originating from Tel Aviv and bound for Newark Liberty International Airport was unexpectedly diverted to Stewart International Airport in Orange County on Friday due to severe weather conditions, resulting in injuries to at least seven passengers.
Flight 85, carrying around 200 passengers, encountered unexpected high winds and turbulence, leading to the decision to divert and make an emergency landing at Stewart Airport, approximately 60 miles north of its intended Newark destination. The aircraft touched down safely at around 6:45 p.m., where emergency response teams were on standby to provide immediate assistance.
The Orange County executive’s office confirmed the incident, noting that emergency medical services were promptly dispatched to the scene to evaluate and treat passengers. Those injured were transported to local hospitals, though the nature and severity of their injuries have not been disclosed.
United Airlines has issued a statement expressing their commitment to passenger safety and detailing the measures taken to accommodate the affected passengers. The airline is actively coordinating with local authorities and medical personnel to ensure the well-being of all passengers and crew involved in the diversion.
Passengers not requiring medical attention were provided with transportation and accommodation arrangements by United Airlines, as efforts were made to minimize the disruption to their travel plans.
