FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office announced the indictment of Carl A. Richards, a 39-year-old Marlboro resident, for the murder that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Richards faces one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, the latter charges due to the presence of three children in the home at the time of the incident.

Police were dispatched to a residence on Texas Road in the Morganville section of Marlboro Township shortly before 1:00 a.m. on January 1, in response to an urgent call for medical assistance for an assaulted male. Upon arrival, they found 64-year-old George L. Mott III unresponsive, suffering from severe injuries to his head, face, and neck. Mott was transported to Old Bridge Medical Center, where he was declared deceased.

The subsequent investigation led by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and the Marlboro Township Police Department determined that a verbal altercation escalated, with Richards assaulting Mott, resulting in Mott’s death. Both individuals lived at the address of the incident. Following his arrest, Richards was detained at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, with the court granting the state’s request to keep him incarcerated pending trial.
