Brooklyn, NY – A Canarsie resident faces charges of vehicular manslaughter following an incident where he allegedly drove under the influence, striking and killing a 68-year-old pedestrian. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced today the arraignment of Gary Turner, 47, of Canarsie, Brooklyn, emphasizing the tragic loss caused by the defendant’s alleged reckless behavior.

Turner was arraigned before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Dale Fong-Frederick, facing charges including second-degree vehicle manslaughter, second-degree vehicular assault, and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence. The court set bail at $150,000 cash or $300,000 bond, with a return court date set for April 16, 2024.

The fatal incident occurred on January 31, 2024, around 6:45 p.m., when Turner, driving a 2017 Dodge Caravan, collided with Luis Garcia, 68, in a crosswalk at the intersection of Glenwood Road and East 105th Street.

The collision resulted in Garcia being thrown to the ground, later succumbing to severe blunt trauma injuries at Brooklyn University Hospital. Investigations revealed Turner’s blood alcohol level was .132, exceeding the legal limit of .08, corroborated by evidence of slurred speech, red eyes, and the smell of alcohol.
