New Jersey Boardwalks Getting $100 Million Facelifts

Trenton, NJ – New Jersey has introduced a $100 million Boardwalk Preservation Fund grant to rejuvenate the state’s beloved shorelines across 18 municipalities.

Governor Phil Murphy stressed the integral role New Jersey’s boardwalks play in the state’s cultural and historical fabric, noting their significance in fostering memories for both residents and tourists. The fund aims to support a variety of enhancements, including the replacement of worn structures and improvements in storm resilience, to ensure the continued allure of these coastal landmarks.

Acting DCA Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez highlighted the economic importance of boardwalks to shore communities and the financial hurdles faced by local governments in their upkeep. The initiative, funded by the American Rescue Plan’s Coronavirus State & Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, is designed to ease these challenges, promoting the prosperity of boardwalks as essential tourist destinations.

The awarded grants will facilitate infrastructure improvements, better accessibility, and upgrades to visitor safety and experiences, with an emphasis on aiding municipalities in financial distress. This strategic focus aims to address the most critical needs along the New Jersey shore.

Among the recipients are Asbury Park and Atlantic City, each receiving $20 million, alongside other municipalities like Belmar Borough, Berkeley Township, and Cape May City, demonstrating the widespread impact of this initiative on enhancing New Jersey’s coastal communities.
