Rescue Team Saves Entangled Seal Pup At New Jersey Beach

Beach Haven, NJ – A seal pup found entangled in plastic waste was rescued by the Stranding Team in Beach Haven on February 15th at 4:30pm. The female Grey seal, caught in the plastic overwrap from a case of bottled water around her neck, was swiftly transported to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) for care.

Upon arrival, the MMSC team removed the entanglement, thankfully before it caused any cuts to the seal’s neck. However, the pup was found to be underweight, lethargic, and suffering from gastrointestinal issues.

A comprehensive medical examination was conducted by MMSC’s veterinarian, including blood panels to identify any underlying conditions and to establish a treatment plan. The pup received supportive care through tube feeding, combining formula with electrolytes, and her intake weight was recorded at 38.2lbs. She is now comfortably resting in Pen 2 of the Pool House.

This rescue comes during the annual Grey seal pup migration, a critical time for these animals. Born from December through February, Grey seal pups nurse for approximately two weeks before being weaned by their mothers. Many then embark on a long journey from their birthplaces in New England and Canadian waters to New Jersey, learning to hunt and evade predators along the way. Upon arrival, they require rest, and some, like this rescued pup, need additional care.

The successful rescue and rehabilitation efforts at MMSC are made possible through the support of the community. The team extends its heartfelt thanks to all supporters for enabling them to provide necessary assistance to these vulnerable marine animals.
