Alabama Mother Charged with Child Abuse After Running Over Son

Boaz, AL – An Alabama mother faces child abuse charges for running over her 7-year-old son as a form of punishment, according to the Boaz Police Department.

The incident occurred on February 9, around 3:30 p.m., when Sarai Rachel James, 27, picked up her son from school following a disciplinary issue. James decided to punish her son by making him walk home, a distance of approximately eight blocks, from the school. During the walk, while James drove beside him, the boy attempted to grab the car’s door handle, leading to him being pulled under the car and run over by a rear tire as James accelerated.

The Boaz Police Chief, Michael Abercrombie, indicated that the incident appears to have been accidental. However, he emphasized that the child would not have been endangered had he not been subjected to this form of punishment. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details about the boy’s condition or the specific charges against James.
