Washington, D.C. – A recent poll conducted by Cygnal, a leading private polling firm, from January 16-18, highlights the significant impact of Donald Trump on voter turnout in the nation’s most competitive congressional districts for the 2024 general election. According to Cygnal’s Vice President of Polling, Brock McCleary, the absence of Trump from the Republican ticket could potentially lead to lower voter turnout, indicating Republicans might face greater losses without him.

The poll also unveiled a division among Democratic voters, with some prioritizing inflation and others concerned with threats to democracy. This split poses a challenge for Democrats in battleground areas to leverage President Biden’s record into tangible ground gains.

Key findings from the poll include:

  • A notable approval rating advantage for Trump over Biden, particularly among Independents and suburban voters. Trump’s approval stands at 45%, compared to Biden’s 37%.
  • Inflation emerges as the top issue for battleground voters at 29%, with Republicans focusing on border security and Democrats on democracy threats.
  • Republicans are trusted more over Democrats on key issues: border security (53% vs. 26%), crime (46% vs. 31%), and inflation (45% vs. 36%).
  • A majority of battleground voters view abortion as a national issue, preferring federal oversight with 48% against state control at 40%.

Cygnal’s segmentation analysis identified four key voter groups:

  • Independents, expressing pessimism about the country’s direction and favoring Republicans on crime, border security, and inflation issues, while supporting more liberal abortion policies.
  • The GOP Base, strongly supporting Trump and prioritizing border security, with a conservative stance on abortion.
  • ‘Inflation Democrats’, primarily concerned with inflation and leaning heavily Democratic.
  • ‘Threats to Democracy’ Democrats, financially better off and focused on democracy issues.

This comprehensive poll underscores the complexities of voter preferences in critical battleground districts, indicating the pivotal role of key issues and figures in the upcoming 2024 general election.
