This Sign Outraged Parents in Jackson Township

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, NJ – It was the summer of 2023 and children were going back to school. A typical American scene of children walking to and from their bus stops, school busses passing, and other rushing to and from work. Except, one family was upset that some people were driving too fast around the children.

This was originally reported in September, but we’re taking a second look at the situation now that tempers have cooled and calmness has prevailed.

A neighborhood dispute had emerged in Jackson Township over a commercial traffic sign installed on a residential lawn by Joseph and Stephanie Rucci, local business owners of Party Zone Rentals. The sign was located at the intersection of Short Hills Boulevard and Mill Pond Road, demanding drivers, “Don’t be an A*hole” in a flashing bright orange display, urging them to slow down.

While few people argued the sign’s intent, many were upset over its message.

Residents expressed concern over the sign’s message, especially its impact on children.

“Our kids have to see this sign and walk by every day,” shared an anonymous neighbor, highlighting the discomfort caused by its vulgarity.

Criticism extended beyond the sign’s content, with neighbors questioning the appropriateness of addressing traffic safety in such a manner. Some saw it as an overstep, suggesting that such issues should be handled by the township and police. “Let the police do their job,” a resident remarked, indicating a preference for official channels over individual actions.

Despite the sign’s intent to promote safety, its execution has not been well-received. The continuous flashing throughout the night has been particularly troubling for those living nearby.

“I wouldn’t mind the sign, the idea is in the right place, but there’s no need for the vulgarity and no need to run it all night long,” another neighbor explained, voicing a common sentiment for a more tactful approach.

Now that we’re six months past that controversial event, what do you think? Do you think the sign should have remained or was taking it down the right choice?
