New Jersey Lawmakers Want Telemarketers to Use Real Caller IDs During Solicitation

Trenton, NJ – The New Jersey Senate Commerce Committee has taken a significant step towards increasing transparency and consumer protection in telemarketing communications. The committee recently advanced a bill, sponsored by Senators James Beach and Nellie Pou, aimed at ensuring telemarketers cannot hide their identity on caller ID systems.

The proposed legislation, identified as S-1237, mandates that all telemarketers transmit either their name or the name of the seller they represent to any caller identification service. This move is designed to tackle the common issue of consumers receiving calls from blocked or altered phone numbers, which obscures the caller’s identity.

Senator Beach, representing Burlington and Camden counties, emphasized the importance of empowering consumers with the ability to make informed decisions about which calls to answer. By clarifying the identity of callers, the bill seeks to enhance consumer autonomy in managing incoming telemarketing calls.

Echoing this sentiment, Senator Pou, who serves as the Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee and represents Bergen and Passaic counties, highlighted the reasonable expectation of consumers to know the identity of incoming callers. The current practice of telemarketers concealing their identity complicates the screening process for recipients, often leading to unnecessary interruptions. The proposed bill aims to address this issue by improving call screening capabilities for individuals, thereby reducing unwanted interactions.

The advancement of S-1237 with a unanimous 5-0 vote reflects a broader legislative effort to bolster consumer rights and protections in the face of intrusive telemarketing practices.
